Strolling on the Croatian Riviera

Today we took a long walk down the "lungomarre", an ancient stone walkway that hugs the shoreline beginning at the harbor in Volosko and extending south through Opatija.

Opatija is known as the Croatian Riviera, and has been a popular tourist destination since Austrian nobility began building summer villas along the Kvarner Gulf in the early 1800s.  It now has many luxury hotels, casinos, nightclubs, cafes, and restaurants. The streets were filled with people, young and old, spending the holiday with family.

We stopped for lunch at an outdoor cafe across from the yacht harbor.  But that wasn't quite enough. A short while later we saw an amazing array of torts, cakes, cheesecakes, chocolate truffles,  and other goodies at Caffe Wagner in the Hotel Milenj. It was too good to pass up.  And they tasted as good as they looked: berry cheesecake, chocolate fantasy cake, and layered Christmas cake.  Hopefully we burned those calories off with all the walking we did.
