Our holiday journey got off to a great start today. We flew from Spokane to Seattle and after a
relatively short layover, we boarded our flight to Amsterdam on Delta. I booked this flight months ago using
frequent flyer miles for Tammy and I. (I
purchased a coach ticket for Ben). Lucky
for me I had enough miles saved up for us to go business class. And I am so glad I did. As I write this, we are about three hours
into our flight to Amsterdam cruising at 35,000 feet.
The pre-flight glass of champagne was
a splendid way to say Bon Voyage! But
that was only the beginning. Once we
were airborne and winging our way on a northeasterly route toward Hudson Bay, the
food service began. We settled into our
flight with an appetizer of grilled shrimp and roasted corn salsa. This was followed by a beet
and goat cheese salad with vinaigrette dressing accompanied by a vegetable soup. Next up was the main
course, seared beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. For
“airplane food” it was all pretty delicious!
I chose a glass of the Castelo di Nipozzano Chianti to pair
with the meal. It is from the Rufina
area of Tuscany, just outside of Florence.
It had an intense but harmonious structure with berry fruit and brown
spice notes and a long finish. Not to
mention the scents of red cherries, sun-dried tomato and a hint of
balsamic. Well, at least that’s what the
tasting notes on the menu said. I am not
sure I have a clue about “harmonious structure” in a wine, but let’s just say
this was a good Italian red wine.
And then there was dessert. I chose the ice cream sundae with caramel syrup
and a brownie on the side. And to
accompany these sweet sensations, a glass of port wine.
It’s time to loosen the seat belt just a little and sit back
and relax for the next six hours until we land.
We have lots of entertainment options – music, tv, movies, games,
etc. Each seat is like a mini-cubicle
with individual touch screens for making our selections. Right now I am
enjoying some festive instrumental Christmas music while watching highlights of
the Chelsea soccer club from the English Premier League. Life is good!! I could get used to being spoiled like this.
