A Christmas to Remember

Last night we hiked up to Sv. Ane Krcka to attend midnight mass.  We climbed dozens of stairs through narrow passageways between centuries old buildings. As we ascended the stairs, the bells of the church began to ring out.

The church was built nearly 300 years ago.  The balcony at the back of the church had a huge pipe organ and that's also where the choir opened mass with a beautiful rendition of Silent Night in Croatian.  We didn't understand much of what was said during mass, but that wasn't that important. What we did understand was being with other Christians half way around the world to celebrate the birth of Jesus gave us much in common aside from our differences in language and culture.  As we exited mass, the organ was playing Joy to the World. And as we descended the stairs back to the harbor, our hearts were indeed filled with joy.
